The MassGAP project was founded in the summer of 2002 for the purpose of increasing the number of women in high-level appointed positions in state government. The MWPC did an analysis of the gender composition of high ranking appointed positions in Massachusetts government. The data showed that only 30% of high-level positions were held by women. With those numbers in hand, the MWPC and the Alliance of Women's and Business Professional Organizations co-founded the Massachusetts Government Appointments Project (MassGAP) to increase the number of women appointed to high-level positions in state government. The goal of the MassGAP project was to be a resource to the new administration by providing the resumes of qualified women to the administration. MassGAP sought to eliminate the excuse that government officials had made in the past--that they could not find qualified women when making high-level appointments. The MWPC continues to meet with state officials to monitor open positions and maintain statistics regarding the appointment of women.
