Governor Romney Honored at the Women’s National Republican Club

Last month, the Women's National Republican Club presented Governor Mitt Romney with their 2005 Exemplary Leadership Award at their annual dinner held in New York City. The group honored Governor Romney for his work in recruiting and promoting women to Cabinet and senior-level positions in his Administration.

"Romney has been previously recognized for his efforts to bring more women into state government. A study released last year by the University at Albany's Center for Women in Government and Civil Society ranked Massachusetts first in the nation in the percentage of women holding top government positions.

"Governor Romney and Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey attribute much of their success in attracting top-level women to serve in their Administration to the Mass GAP program spearheaded by the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus (MWPC) shortly after the 2002 gubernatorial election. The Mass GAP project was a collaborative effort conducted by the MWPC and the Romney Administration. The MWPC solicited and reviewed hundreds of resumes from women throughout the Commonwealth in both the public and private sectors to help the newly elected Governor and Lieutenant Governor appoint the most qualified women candidates for leadership positions in state government. As a result of Mass GAP, several talented women were appointed to senior positions in the Romney Administration.
